Farm Manager Position

Summary

The farm manager ensures the smooth running of the company’s farms, its day-to-day activities, ensuring compliance with the company’s policies, procedures, standards and regulations. S/he would also implement strategies for maximum yield, organize farm administrative tasks, manage any associated businesses, farmers, interns and staff, prepare budgets, purchase supplies, maintain relationships with vendors and clients and ensure maximum profitability

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this role successfully, the Farm Manager will perform the following responsibilities in relation to all Farmwella farms, which will include but are not limited to:

Core Task

  • Spearhead crop production, harvest, pest, disease, weed, nutrient and water management operations, and other farm activities
  • Prepare plans and schedules for planting and harvesting and ensuring staff and farmers understand expectations
  • Plan finances and production to maintain farm progress against budget parameters.
  • Undertake practical activities such as planting, weeding, farm input production, application of manure or pesticides, amongst others.
  • Management of sales and marketing of farm products
  • Purchase farm supplies such as fertilizer, pesticides and seeds
  • Schedule the repair and maintenance of farm equipment and machinery.
  • Plan activities for trainee staff, interns, farmers, farm workers, mentoring and monitoring them
  • Assisting with the recruitment and training of new staff members
  • Collaborate with senior staff to prepare budgets and financial reports
  • Handling the marketing and sale of products produced on the farm.
  • Ensure the farm activities comply with the company’s regulations
  • Maintain knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of how they spread and how to treat them
  • Ensure all staff and farmers adhere to health and safety regulations
  • Protect the environment and maintaining biodiversity
  • Data collection and record keeping on farm activities and crop production

In addition, to the ones mentioned above farm managers also supervise various activities for generating income such as processing and selling of farm products, value addition, trainings, amongst others.

Work Experience

S/he will be required to have previous hands-on farming experience in vegetable production and farm management.

Qualifications & Training

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture
  • Additional courses or experience in Crop Production, Farm Business Management, or Horticulture are recommended.
  • Extensive experience in a farming-related field.
  • Management experience would be a plus
  • A passion for Agriculture.

Salary

Competitive salary scale based on improvements from top private farms in Nigeria. Salary is negotiable but performance-based. Base salary constitutes 70%, while 30% is a bonus based on predefined individual performance indicators and monthly organizational performance.

Working Hours

Farm Managers are expected to work at least 45 hours a week, from Mondays to Saturdays.

What to Expect

  • You will have access to staff housing provided by the company.
  • The work maybe highly stressful due to factors beyond your control.
  • Fluctuations in market prices can make long-term forecasting difficult
  • Although much of the work is office-based, many work activities will be on the farm and highly dependent on weather and season.
  • Traveling during the working day may occasionally be necessary.
